bookmark – sewing with kids

There’s just nothing quite like the smell of a new book, nothing like turning a crisp page.  Every shelf deserves a book, and every book deserves a great bookmark.  And that’s all there is to it.

MATERIALS NEEDED

12″x2″ felt
1 yd ribbon
matching thread

INSTRUCTIONS

1.Cut the ribbon into 6″ strips.

2. Line the ribbon side-by-side along one of the 2″ sides of the felt.  Sew across the edge to hold them in place.

3. Fold the felt/lace in half, sandwiching the ribbon in the middle, and sew down the 2″ side again, making a big loop with ribbon inside.

4.  Turn the loop right-side-out.  Press (with adult supervision)

5. Select any stitch, and sew from just below the first ribbon down the length of the bookmark.

Change the stitch and continue sewing decorative stitches side-by-side down the bookmark.

6. To finish the bookmark, cut off any excess thread and sew a zig-zag across the top and bottom of the bookmark to secure the ends of each decorative stitch.  Reverse stitch and clip your thread.

7. Tie knots at the end of each ribbon, to prevent fraying.

It’s almost so awesome, you won’t want to shut your book on it!
