TAPERING YOUR OWN PANTS

I buy all of my clothes at thrift stores.  The thing is, it can be tricky finding secondhand pants that, well, fit.  That being said…

I have this pair of pants that made me feel like I was 14 again, trying on my long pants after a summer of shorts and an unknown growth spurt.  I love a great pair of ankle pants, but these weren’t a great pair of ankle pants.  So for months and months, and months I rolled each leg up twice, in an attempt to hide the floodwater-flair.  Psssh, I should have tapered these bad boys a looooong time ago.  Maybe you should too.

It’s as simple as turning your pants inside out, pinning each leg evenly, creating the taper you’d like, and sewing (using the pins as your guideline) until the new seam meets back up with the original seam, somewhere around the knee.  Trim the seam allowance and finish the raw edges.

One thing, if your pant needs a serious overhaul, you may want to take them in from both sides, rather than just the one.

I bet you’re thinking about all of those pants sitting at the bottom of your stash, aren’t you.

  1. I did have a tailor shop at one time and now I am retired. The narrowing of the legs is actually called pegging the legs.Have a great time restyling yor pant legs!

  2. This is so great. I was just thinking about doing this to some of my jeans that don’t get worn. It’s always nice to have a tutorial with such nice pictures and clear instructions!
